DescriptionThis course will introduce students to scholarly practices across a range of humanities and social science disciplines, including, but not limited to, history, literature, film and media studies, art history, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology. Students will encounter methodologies through deep engagement with recent academic journal articles, review essays, and book chapters. The class will analyze how scholars structure professional academic writing by applying concepts and analytical strategies as well as through positioning arguments in relation to scholarly debates. Emphasis will be placed on bringing diverse methodologies and conceptual frameworks together to transcend disciplinary boundaries.
Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this course, students will be able to:
– Recognize key concepts in the humanities and social sciences;
– Apply humanities and social science methodologies in an interdisciplinary manner;
– Practice understanding scholarly arguments in relation to current scholarly debate;
– Use advanced critical reading skills through an engagement with professional scholarship;
– Critique and topically analyze a diverse set of media sources;
– Structure and write a graduate level interdisciplinary research paper;
– Practice oral communication through reading facilitation and in-class presentations.
